Alcorn County, Mississippi, located in the northeastern corner of the state, is anchored by the city of Corinth and served by a court system that spans several distinct tiers. The Circuit Court, Chancery Court, Justice Court, Youth Court, and municipal courts collectively handle the full range of criminal, civil, family, probate, and local ordinance matters filed within the county. Each court maintains its own records and operates through a designated clerk’s office, which serves as the public gateway for accessing case information.

Mississippi residents and researchers can turn to MississippiCourts.us as a reference for publicly available court information, court locations, and the state judiciary’s official resources. Court records in Mississippi can also be accessed through the clerk’s office in the county where a case was filed, through public access terminals at the courthouse, and through the state’s electronic case management platform. The right starting point depends largely on which court handled the matter in question and when it was filed.

How to Look Up a Court Case in Alcorn County?

The two primary custodians for Alcorn County court records are the Circuit Clerk’s Office (criminal and civil cases) and the Chancery Clerk’s Office (equity, domestic relations, and probate matters). Both are located in Corinth and maintain separate records systems.

Are Court Records Public in Alcorn County?

Mississippi’s Public Records Act, Miss. Code Ann. §§ 25-61-1 through 25-61-19, establishes the general principle that public records are available for inspection by any person unless otherwise provided by law. Court records filed in Alcorn County — including case filings, docket entries, judgments, and orders — fall within this presumption of public access.

However, specific categories of records are restricted or withheld entirely:

  • Juvenile and Youth Court records — confidential by statute; not accessible to the general public
  • Adoption records and proceedings — sealed under Mississippi law
  • Records sealed by court order — any case or document sealed by a judge of competent jurisdiction is withheld from public inspection
  • Custody and certain domestic relations records — access may be limited to parties and their counsel
  • Records that could compromise ongoing investigations or endanger public safety — discretionary withholding permitted
  • Personal identifying information of judicial officers and law enforcement personnel — protected from disclosure

Mississippi courts follow the Mississippi Rules of Court, which provide procedural guidelines for records management and public access. When a document contains both public and restricted content, the clerk or court may redact the protected portions and release the remainder. Individuals who are denied access to records they believe are public may seek relief through the courts under the Public Records Act.

Alcorn County Probate Court Records

In Mississippi, probate jurisdiction rests with the Chancery Court, not a separate probate court. The Alcorn County Chancery Court therefore handles all estate administration, will probations, guardianships, and conservatorships for the county. Chancery Clerk Keith Settlemires manages these filings alongside the court’s domestic relations and property records.

Probate proceedings that may be filed in the Alcorn County Chancery Court include:

  • Probate of last wills and testaments
  • Administration of intestate estates (for those who died without a will)
  • Appointment of executors, administrators, and personal representatives
  • Guardianships and conservatorships for adults and minors
  • Approval of minor settlements
  • Small estate affidavits for qualifying estates

Probate records are generally public records in Mississippi, accessible through the Chancery Clerk’s Office in person or by mail at 501 Waldron Street (P.O. Box 69), Corinth, MS 38834. Electronic access to probate case records filed in the Chancery Court is also available through the MEC system, which serves both the Alcorn County Circuit Court and Chancery Court. Filing for probate can be done through MEC’s e-filing platform or in person at the Chancery Clerk’s office during regular business hours.

Applicable filing fees are set out in the Chancery Court Filing Fee Schedule published by the clerk’s office. Individuals who need legal guidance about the probate process in Mississippi can access the state’s Mississippi Free Legal Advice portal linked from the Chancery Clerk’s office page. Complex estate matters — particularly those involving contested wills, creditor disputes, or multi-party guardianships — generally require the assistance of a licensed Mississippi attorney.
