Mississippi Court Records
The Mississippi Courts website is made to educate individuals on how the Magnolia State's judiciary functions. Like other states, Mississippi uses a structured tiered court system. The system is broken down into four levels: the Supreme Court (the highest level), the Court of Appeals (the intermediate appellate level), the trial courts of general jurisdiction (Circuit and Chancery Courts), and the trial courts of limited jurisdiction (County, Justice, and Municipal Courts).
Trial courts are where cases in the state usually begin, either at the district level through the courts of general jurisdiction (Circuit and Chancery Courts) or at the local level through trial courts of limited jurisdiction, specifically Justice and Municipal Courts. The state has a robust municipal court system comprising 226 courts. If cases are not adequately resolved at the trial level, they move to the appellate-level courts.
According to the Mississippi Judiciary Public Records Policy, court records are presumed open to the public, meaning individuals may inspect and obtain copies of a record. However, restrictions may apply to certain records that are classified as confidential by law. The information on this website does not constitute official records and should not be interpreted as legal advice.
