How Do I Look Up Warrants in Mississippi?

MississippiCourts.us is not a consumer reporting agency as defined by the FCRA and does not provide consumer reports. All searches conducted on MississippiCourts.us are subject to the Terms of Service and Privacy Notice.

You can use MississippiCourts.us to locate a warrant in Mississippi, as it compiles publicly available information reported by Mississippi's courts and law enforcement agencies into a single search. A search reveals the warrant type, issuing court, case number, alleged offense, and bail or bond amount, when available.

Mississippi's 82 counties each maintain their own circuit court, county court, and justice court systems, all operating independently when it comes to warrant records. The state completed its rollout of the Mississippi Electronic Courts (MEC) system statewide in mid-2025, but public access to case filings through MEC's companion portal — called PAMEC — requires a paid subscription ($10 annual registration fee plus $0.20 per page viewed). That fee barrier, combined with the fact that PAMEC is designed around case filings rather than warrant-specific lookups, means most people searching for warrant information in Mississippi hit a dead end before they find what they need.

A single search through MississippiCourts.us bypasses the county-by-county fragmentation and the PAMEC subscription wall, pulling available warrant data from across the state into one result set — a significant advantage in a state where even neighboring counties can have entirely different record-keeping practices.

Are Warrants Public Information in Mississippi?

Mississippi's Public Records Act (Miss. Code Ann. § 25-61-1 et seq.) establishes a broad presumption that government records are public property and open to inspection. Under § 25-61-5, any person can request a public record, and the agency must produce it or issue a denial within seven working days — with a hard outer limit of fourteen working days if the agency provides a written explanation for the delay. Denials must cite a specific exemption in writing.

How that framework applies to warrants depends on the type:

  • Arrest warrants and bench warrants tied to filed charging affidavits or indictments are part of the court record and are accessible to the public once the case has been docketed. Mississippi's indictment process does add an unusual wrinkle: under MRCrP 2.1(b)(2), grand jury indictments are initially recorded in a "Secret Record of Indictments" and remain sealed until the capias is executed and the case receives a cause number. Until that point, the indictment — and the capias attached to it — is not publicly available.
  • Search warrants are governed by MRCrP 4.2 through 4.4 and must be returned to the court after execution. The underlying affidavit is part of the court file, but if the warrant relates to an ongoing investigation, the records fall under the investigative report exemption in § 25-61-12(2)(a), which gives law enforcement agencies discretion to withhold investigative files entirely.
  • Investigative reports broadly — defined in § 25-61-3(f) to include crime scene reports, witness identities, and information that could jeopardize prosecution — are exempt from disclosure while in the possession of a law enforcement agency. Incident reports, by contrast, are explicitly declared public records under § 25-61-12(c).

The distinction between an incident report and an investigative report is where the gap between legal access and practical availability is widest. A warrant may be legally part of the public court file, but if the associated records are still classified as investigative, the sheriff's office or police department can decline to confirm the warrant's existence.

How to Search for a Warrant in Mississippi

  1. Use MississippiCourts.us. Our Instant Warrant Lookup presents you with warrant record data compiled from available public resources in one convenient search. When available, you can find warrant type, issuing court, case number, alleged offense, and bail/bond amount, among other details, depending on the record type and issuing county.
  2. Search the PAMEC portal. The Mississippi Electronic Courts (MEC) system offers public access through its PAMEC subscriber interface. Registration costs $10 per year, and document views are charged at $0.20 per page. PAMEC allows case searches across circuit and county courts statewide, but coverage for justice courts varies, and warrant-specific queries are not a built-in feature — you will need the defendant's name or case number and must review docket entries to identify warrant activity.
  3. Contact the county sheriff's office or circuit clerk. For counties where online records are limited, a direct inquiry to the sheriff's office remains the most reliable method. Have the subject's full legal name, date of birth, and the county where the offense may have occurred ready. Mississippi's 82 county sheriff's offices handle warrant service for their respective jurisdictions, and many maintain active warrant lists that they will share on request — though few publish them online.
  4. Visit the courthouse in person. The circuit clerk's office in each county maintains the criminal case docket, and a walk-in request can produce warrant information that is not accessible remotely. If you are inquiring about a warrant that may be issued in your own name, be aware that appearing at a courthouse or sheriff's office creates a risk of immediate arrest.
  5. Retain an attorney. A Mississippi criminal defense attorney can contact the circuit clerk's office, the district attorney, or the court directly to determine whether an active warrant exists — and can do so without triggering an arrest.

How Long Is a Warrant Active in Mississippi?

Arrest warrants and bench warrants in Mississippi remain active indefinitely until the defendant is apprehended, appears before the court, or the warrant is recalled by the issuing judge. Search warrants operate under a strict timeline: MRCrP 4.3(1) requires execution within ten days of issuance, after which the warrant expires and the unexecuted warrant must be returned to the court. This ten-day ceiling applies to anticipatory search warrants as well. Mississippi law also restricts when certain warrants can be served: under MRCrP 3.2(a)(4), a judge sets bail on every arrest warrant at the time of issuance, and the warrant must command that the defendant be brought before the issuing judge or the nearest available judge with jurisdiction — a requirement that can delay execution in rural districts where judges sit on rotating schedules.

Mississippi Warrant Records by County

Warrants in Mississippi are issued and maintained at the county level. Each of the state's 82 counties has a sheriff's office responsible for executing arrest warrants and capiases issued by the circuit, county, and justice courts within its jurisdiction. Mississippi does not operate a centralized, publicly accessible statewide warrant database. The Mississippi Crime Information Center (MSCIC), maintained by the Department of Public Safety, aggregates warrant data for law enforcement use, but access is restricted to authorized agencies. Public searches must therefore be conducted county by county, either through the PAMEC system, by contacting the county sheriff directly, or through the circuit clerk's office.
