LeFlore County, Mississippi operates a multi-court system centered in Greenwood, where four separate courts divide jurisdiction over civil, criminal, family, juvenile, and probate matters. Each court keeps its own records — criminal case dockets, civil judgments, adoption proceedings, land records — and each has a designated clerk who handles public access. Before you start searching, it helps to know which court handled the matter you're researching, because that determines which clerk's office holds the files you need.

You can research Mississippi court cases through official clerk offices, in-person courthouse visits, and online tools. MississippiCourts.us — the State of Mississippi Judiciary's website — provides a directory of trial courts, clerks, and links to the Mississippi Electronic Courts (MEC) system for electronic case access and e-filing. For cases not available electronically, the relevant clerk of court in LeFlore County handles direct records requests.

Are Court Records Public in LeFlore County?

Court records in LeFlore County are generally presumed to be public documents. The governing framework is the Mississippi Public Records Act (Laws, 1996, ch. 453), which establishes the right of citizens to inspect and copy public records held by government agencies, including courts. You can make access requests in person, by telephone, or by mail to the relevant clerk's office.

Despite that general openness, Section 25-61-12 of the Public Records Act identifies specific categories of records withheld from public inspection. Throughout LeFlore County — and Mississippi generally — the following types of records are restricted:

  • Records that would disclose a crime victim's identity
  • Records that could endanger the safety of a witness, law enforcement officer, or informant
  • Records revealing law enforcement investigative techniques or results
  • Records identifying the name or address of any person holding a weapon permit
  • Business, financial, and trade secret records of private entities contracting with public bodies
  • Medical purchase or sales records and health professional recruitment details of public hospital boards
  • Victim impact statements and personal information of victims filed with the Mississippi Department of Corrections or the State Parole Board
  • Records of juvenile proceedings, which are confidential by statute

When a record contains both public and exempt information, the custodian must redact the restricted portions and release the rest — not withhold the entire document.

LeFlore County Criminal Court Records

Criminal matters in LeFlore County are handled at two levels depending on the severity of the offense. The 4th Circuit Court District has jurisdiction over felony criminal cases, while the Justice Court handles misdemeanor charges and traffic citations.

4th Circuit Court District — Circuit Clerk Johnny Gary maintains records for all criminal cases filed in the circuit court, including felonies and serious misdemeanors assigned upward. The office is at 310 W. Market Street, Greenwood (P.O. Box 1953, Greenwood, MS 38935-1953), reachable at (662) 453-1435. Beyond court records, the Circuit Clerk also handles voter registration, election oversight, and records of deeds and land conveyances.

Justice Court — Three judges serve the Northern, Central, and Southern districts of LeFlore County: Hon. James E. Campbell, Hon. Neysha Sanders, and Hon. Carlos D. Palmer, respectively. Under Mississippi Code § 9-11-11, Justice Court handles misdemeanor criminal charges, traffic citations issued by the Mississippi Highway Patrol, the LeFlore County Sheriff's Department, the Public Service Commission, and Mississippi Valley State University Police, as well as all wildlife citations within the county. It also has preliminary jurisdiction over felony cases. Justice Court Clerk Martha Howard can be reached at (662) 453-1605.

For statewide criminal history information, the Mississippi Department of Public Safety's Criminal Information Center (CIC) maintains criminal records submitted by law enforcement agencies across the state. Name-based background checks are available through the Mississippi DPS background check portal. Arrest records tied to specific incidents are maintained by the LeFlore County Sheriff's Office rather than the courts.

LeFlore County Civil Court Records

Civil litigation in LeFlore County is distributed between the Circuit Court and the Justice Court based on the dollar amount and nature of the dispute. The Circuit Court handles larger civil actions; Justice Court processes civil claims that do not exceed $2,500.00 under Mississippi Code § 9-11-11.

The Circuit Clerk's office files and maintains civil case records, including dockets, judgments, and supporting documents. You can access civil records by visiting the clerk's office at 310 W. Market Street during regular business hours or by submitting a written mail request. The same office also records deeds, mortgages, surveys, and subdivision plats — functions that often intersect with title searches and property ownership disputes arising in civil litigation.

For smaller civil disputes, the Justice Court at 306 W. Market Street offers a more accessible forum. Individuals with money claims under the $2,500.00 threshold, eviction matters, or other qualifying civil actions can file directly with Justice Court Clerk Martha Howard.

Electronic case access through Mississippi Electronic Courts (MEC) allows registered users to access case filings in enrolled courts. Courts not yet on MEC require direct contact with the clerk's office for document retrieval. Standard copying fees apply for reproduced records, and the clerk can advise on the current fee schedule at the time of your request.

Land records — including warranty deeds, deeds of trust, and powers of attorney — are also archived by the Chancery Clerk as part of the county's public land records system, with indexes maintained for subdivisions, sections, and direct/reverse grantor-grantee entries. These records are particularly relevant in probate proceedings involving real property and can be reviewed at the same office.
