Panola County, Mississippi has a distinctive administrative structure that sets it apart from most counties in the state. It operates with two separate judicial districts — the First Judicial District headquartered in Sardis and the Second Judicial District headquartered in Batesville — each maintaining its own courthouse, clerk offices, and court records. This dual-district system means that identifying the correct courthouse for a specific case is essential before attempting to search or request records. Panola County’s courts produce a broad range of official documents, including indictments, civil complaints, chancery court decrees, probate filings, juvenile court records, and municipal court dockets.
Mississippi court records can be located through official clerk offices, courthouse visits, public access terminals, and state-managed digital systems. MississippiCourts.us provides a useful starting point for understanding how the state’s court system is organized and for locating publicly available case information across Mississippi’s county and appellate courts.
How to Look Up a Court Case in Panola County?
The search method depends on which court handled the case and whether the records have been digitized. Several options are available:
Online via Mississippi Electronic Courts (MEC)
The Mississippi Electronic Courts (MEC) system is the state’s internet-based case management and document filing platform used by Chancery, Circuit, and County Courts statewide. Through MEC, users can access docket information, view case documents, and retrieve filing records. Account registration is required, and fees apply — document viewing costs $0.20 per page, with an annual registration fee of $10.00. The MEC helpdesk is reachable at helpdesk@mec.ms.gov or (601) 576-4650.
In-Person at the Clerk’s Office
Records can be inspected and copied in person at the clerk’s office of the court where the case was filed. Panola County maintains separate clerk offices in both Batesville and Sardis. Reproduction fees — typically around $0.20 per page — apply for copies.
By Mail
Written requests for specific records can be mailed to the appropriate clerk’s office. Include the full names of all parties, the approximate filing date, and any known case number. Allow adequate time for processing.

Are Court Records Public in Panola County?
Under Miss. Code Ann. § 25-61-1 et seq., the Mississippi Public Records Act declares that public records must be available for inspection by any person unless a specific statutory exemption applies. The Mississippi Judiciary also supports open access to judicial records, and most court filings in Panola County are accessible to the public either at the courthouse or through the MEC system.
However, a number of record categories are shielded from public disclosure under Mississippi law or by court order:
- Juvenile and youth court records — governed by the Mississippi Youth Court Law and kept strictly confidential; disclosure is prohibited except as specifically authorized by statute
- Sealed records — files sealed by court order or by statute are inaccessible to the general public
- Adoption records — sealed to protect all parties involved in adoption proceedings
- Divorce records — typically not open to general public access; restricted to the parties, their immediate families, and authorized representatives
- Active investigation records — materials that could compromise an ongoing law enforcement investigation may be withheld
- Sensitive personal information — judicial officer and law enforcement personnel personal details, as well as records whose release would compromise personal safety, are protected
- Mental health commitment records — restricted by applicable Mississippi statutes
The Mississippi Rules of Court govern court procedure and record-keeping obligations across all trial courts. Requesters whose access is denied may seek review through the appropriate legal channels.
