Yazoo County's court system is based in Yazoo City and handles criminal cases, civil disputes, family law matters, probate administration, and juvenile proceedings. The records produced by these courts — indictments, motions, judgments, orders, and case filings — form the official record of legal activity in the county. They're used for legal research, title searches, background checks, and general public oversight. All Mississippi court records, including those in Yazoo County, are created and maintained under the Mississippi Rules of Court.

If you're looking for court case information in Yazoo County, you have several options: the state judiciary's website, the local clerk offices, public access terminals at the courthouse, and the state's electronic filing system. MississippiCourts.us can help you figure out which court holds the records you need and point you toward publicly available case information before you contact a clerk's office directly.

How to Look Up a Court Case in Yazoo County?

You can access Yazoo County court records online, in person, or by mail. Which method works best depends on the type of record and the court that handled the case.

Online — Mississippi Electronic Courts (MEC) and PAMEC:

The Mississippi Electronic Courts (MEC) system is the state's main electronic filing and case management platform. Both the Yazoo County Circuit Court and the Yazoo County Chancery Court participate in MEC. Its public-facing portal, called PAMEC (Public Access Mississippi Electronic Case Management), lets registered users search case dockets, view filed documents, and track case activity from anywhere. Registration and annual fees are required for MEC access. If you have questions, reach the MEC helpdesk at helpdesk@mec.ms.gov or (601) 576-4650.

You can also submit a written record request by mail to either clerk at the addresses above. Include the full names of all parties, the approximate filing date or year, the case type, and a valid form of identification. Under Miss. Code Ann. § 25-61-7, the clerk's office may charge reasonable fees to cover the actual cost of searching, copying, and mailing records.

Are Court Records Public in Yazoo County?

Mississippi's Public Access to Public Records Act (Miss. Code Ann. § 25-61) creates a general presumption that government records — including most court records held by county clerks — are open to the public. Anyone may inspect and obtain copies of qualifying records after paying the applicable fees. However, certain categories of records are exempt from disclosure.

Records restricted from public access include:

  • Youth Court proceedings — all records tied to juvenile delinquency and child protection cases are confidential under Miss. Code § 43-21-259; only authorized court staff, guardians ad litem, and parties with a court order may access them
  • Adoption and guardianship records — restricted under Mississippi Code § 93-17-25
  • Mental health commitment records — sealed to protect patient privacy
  • Records sealed by court order — the contents of judicially sealed files cannot be released, regardless of case type
  • Sealed indictments — withheld while a criminal investigation is still active
  • Records involving confidential informants — certain criminal case materials may be partially or fully restricted

If a record is restricted, the clerk's office can usually confirm the case exists but cannot hand over the protected contents. Anyone who believes a request was wrongly denied can pursue the administrative appeal process set out in the Public Records Act.

Yazoo County Criminal Court Records

The Yazoo County Circuit Court is where serious criminal cases are processed, including all felony indictments, arraignments, trials, and sentencing.

The Circuit Clerk keeps all criminal case files for both Circuit and County Court proceedings. Publicly available records include charging documents, indictments, docket entries, motions, plea agreements, and sentencing orders, subject to the exemptions outlined above.

  • Provide the defendant's full name and, if you have it, the case number or approximate filing date

  • Pay the search and copying fees before the records are released

You can also search for electronically filed cases remotely through the MEC/PAMEC system.

Yazoo County Civil Court Records

Civil records in Yazoo County cover property disputes, contract actions, equity matters, and other non-criminal legal proceedings. Which court handles a case depends on the nature of the claim — jurisdiction is divided between the Circuit Court and the Chancery Court.

The Yazoo County Circuit Court takes civil cases at law, including personal injury suits and contract disputes above the Justice Court threshold. The Yazoo County Chancery Court handles equity matters — real property disputes, title actions, lis pendens, and related instruments — which means the Chancery Clerk's office is your primary stop for most real estate-related civil records.

Among the records the Chancery Clerk maintains are deeds and mortgages, construction and condominium liens, federal tax liens and state tax warrants, lis pendens (notices of pending lawsuits), military discharge records, and land rolls and tax receipts (archived).

To request civil records in person or by mail, send a written request to the appropriate clerk's office — the Circuit Clerk for civil law cases, the Chancery Clerk for equity and property matters. Include the party names, the case number if you know it, and the approximate filing date. Search, duplication, and mailing fees apply under Miss. Code Ann. § 25-61-7.

Civil case filings are also available online through the MEC system and can be searched remotely via PAMEC. Both the Yazoo County Chancery Court and Circuit Court actively participate in MEC.

Both applicants must appear in person with valid photo identification and must meet Mississippi's statutory requirements. You can request certified copies of marriage records from the Circuit Clerk in person or by mail. For marriages that took place after January 1, 1926, certified copies are also available through the Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH) Vital Records division — either in person at 222 Marketridge Drive, Ridgeland, MS 39157, or by ordering remotely.

Birth and Death Certificates:

Vital records for Yazoo County residents are managed at the state level by the Mississippi State Department of Health. Under Mississippi Code Annotated § 41-57-2, these records are confidential and may only be accessed by the person named on the record, parents listed on a birth certificate, legal guardians or authorized representatives, or individuals with a court order.

Yazoo County Probate Court Records

In Mississippi, probate jurisdiction belongs exclusively to the Chancery Court. That makes the Yazoo County Chancery Court the venue for all estate administration, will probation, guardianship, and conservatorship proceedings. The Chancery Clerk maintains the full set of probate case files.

Probate records typically include petitions to probate a will or for letters of administration, original wills and testamentary documents, letters testamentary or letters of administration issued to personal representatives, inventories and appraisals of estate assets, accountings and final settlements, guardianship and conservatorship filings and court orders, and name change petitions.

To request probate records:

  • Call the Chancery Clerk's Office at (662) 746-2661 first to confirm the record is available
  • Visit in person at 211 E. Broadway St., Yazoo City, MS 39194, during office hours (Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.), or mail a written request to P.O. Box 68, Yazoo City, MS 39194
  • Include the decedent's full name, approximate date of death, and any known case number
  • Pay the search and copy fees when you make your request

Older or archived probate records may not be stored on-site at the Chancery Clerk's Office. Historical probate files — including early estate records from Yazoo County's founding years — may be held by the Mississippi Department of Archives and History (MDAH), which operates a research facility and digital archive for historical government records statewide. If you're doing genealogical or historical research, contact MDAH directly to ask about the availability of early Yazoo County probate materials.

Some probate records — particularly those from guardianship cases involving minors or incapacitated adults — may be restricted. A formal written request and, in some situations, a court order may be necessary before those records can be released.
